WA: Detainees hand in weapons at Christmas
PERTH, Jan 1 AAP - A group of detainees who took over part of the Christmas Islanddetention centre were handing in their weapons early today, a Department of Immigrationspokeswoman said.
Detainees armed with pipes had been engaged in a stand-off with Australasian CorrectionalManagement (ACM) staff and police at the camp, while firefighters monitored a smoulderingfire in a dining room.
"Detainees are handing in their weapons and negotiations are taking place", the spokeswomantold AAP.
She said the situation could be resolved later today.
