Qld: Student suing school for nearly $800,000

BRISBANE, Aug 22 AAP - A former student of a prestigious school has filed legal actionin the Brisbane Supreme Court, claiming nearly $800,000 for alleged sexual abuse by ateacher.

The man was a student at Ipswich Grammar School between 1996 to 2000. The teacher isnow serving an eight year jail term after pleading guilty to over 100 sex abuse charges.

Simon Harrison of Brisbane law firm Shine Roche McGowan said the writ will allege thatIpswich Grammar failed to act on reports of sexual abuse and failed to protect the studentfrom what it called "sickening acts".

"My client suffered humiliating and degrading treatment by a man whose duty it wasto nurture and to teach," Mr Harrison said in a statement.

"This perverted teacher played out his vile sexual fantasies on an innocent boy whoselife has been ruined."

The legal action was seeking $785,125, including $400,000 in exemplary damages.

A similar amount in exemplary damages were awarded last year to a female former studentat a Toowoomba Prep School to serve as a punishment and a deterrent to other institutionsnot to ignore allegations of sexual abuse, Mr Harrison said.
