SA:Human bones found in Adelaide
A second human leg bone has been found in the Adelaide Hills as police sift through
20 tonnes of loam quarried south of the city.
The bone was found today at the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens in the Adelaide Hills after
police combed through soil sourced from quarries on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The search was prompted after a human leg bone was found at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens
in the city last week in mulch sourced from the Mount Lofty site.
Police say the bones could be Aboriginal remains, dating back more than 200 years,
but could also be much younger.

NSW:Age labels to stop beef rip-offs
SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - NSW shoppers will no longer be tricked into paying top dollar for
older beef, with new labelling rules detailing the age of the meat being sold.
The labelling system, with five age categories, will come into effect on August 31,
making NSW the first jurisdiction in the country to provide truth in labelling for beef.
Under the changes, butchers and retailers will have to classify their meat as `Yearling'
if it comes from animals less than 18 months old, `Young' if it is 18 months to two-and-half
years old, and `Intermediate' up to three years.
Beef from animals older than three years will be broken into two categories - `Mature'
for cuts up to 3.5 years, and `Economy' for meat older than that.
The use of terms such as `A Grade', `Export Quality' and `Prime' will be banned.
The changes will protect consumers from being charged top dollar for older cuts of
beef, Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said.
Shoppers will also get the information they need to match the type of meat to the meal
being cooked.
"Put simply, younger best quality beef commands a premium price, whereas an older cow
provides a cheaper cut," Mr Whan said in a statement.
"Consumers will now have clear information to help them decide which beef they might
want to purchase to best suit their requirements.
"For example the younger more tender cuts would be best suited for something like a
barbecue, whereas the older meat tends to have more flavour and be best suited to stews,
casseroles or curries."
Mr Whan said a six month introductory period would give businesses time to comply with
the new system, before penalties were enforced for breaching the labelling standards.
A consumer education program will begin in January next year.

Fed: Qld horse stud launches horse flu legal action
Eds: Adds comments from the federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke
By Jessica Marszalek
BRISBANE, Aug 11 AAP - A Queensland horse stud has launched a landmark legal action
against the federal government over the 2007 horse flu outbreak which the stud says caused
it to lose more than $3 million.
Equine influenza (EI) devastated the horse industry in NSW and Queensland in 2007 after
the disease escaped from an Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) facility
at Eastern Creek in Sydney's west.
Lawyers on behalf of Wattle Brae Stud, at Nobby on Queensland's Darling Downs, lodged
papers at the Supreme Court of Queensland on Tuesday seeking compensation for losses suffered
due to the outbreak.
The stud is seeking damages for negligence, interest on damages and for legal costs.
The papers say officials acting on behalf of the federal government allowed the EI
virus to escape the Eastern Creek quarantine station on the person, clothing or equipment
of someone who had not undergone adequate, or any, cleaning or disinfection.
"At the time of the escape of the virus, the defendant, the minister, the director
of quarantine, AQIS and Biosecurity had failed to take reasonable steps to establish a
system of quarantine to control or prevent the introduction of, establishment or spread
of equine influenza throughout Australia and thereby breached their duty of care to the
plaintiff," it states.
The horse stud's principal, Gary Turkington, said his stud was quarantined for three
months during the breeding season and all of his horses contracted the virus.
"We lost a lot of money and lost a lot of clients, and it's going to take a lot to
get back to where we were before," he told AAP.
"And the incompetence of the government, the way it was all run and just the blatant
incompetence of the quarantine station which we pay our taxes for, I think they should
be made liable."
He said many other breeders and horse businesses were just as angry as he was.
The landmark case, brought by Gold Coast law firm Attwood Marshall, will be eagerly
watched by hundreds of Australian businesses, Attwood Marshall Lawyers partner Jeff Garrett
said.
Mr Garrett said he expected to lodge more than 600 claims if the test case proved successful
and compensation could total more than $60 million.
He said Wattle Brae's losses resulted from the shutdown of the breeding industry, after
the government body AQIS released a horse carrying the disease from its quarantine facility.
"Losses were suffered at all levels of the horse industry - from barrier attendants
and farriers who have lost wages to breeders who have lost millions," Mr Garrett said
in a statement.
"We are hopeful the government will recognise the rights of the claimants and move
quickly in regard to compensation acknowledging the suffering and loss many people and
businesses have endured."
Agriculture Minister Tony Burke told AAP: "I've always said that compensation matters
based on the previous government's handling of equine influenza would be tested in the
courts."
"Now that an action has apparently been lodged, it is difficult for me to comment further."

Fed: Distillers say they don't want collected tax refunded
CANBERRA, Aug 29 AAP - Distillers say they don't want the federal government to return
the $200 million that has been collected so far from a tax hike on alcopops - an amount
the government says is $100 million more.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the industry would be looking for a windfall profit
if the government could not get the Senate to approve its measure to address binge drinking.
The government imposed a tax increase of 70 per cent on ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages
in April, a move that needed to be approved by parliament within a year.
The coalition has indicated it will oppose the tax which the government estimates will
raise about $2 billion, some of which will be spent on programs to address binge drinking.
Mr Rudd said the windfall gain to distillers would be $300 million, which could be
better spent on such things as lifting the number of elective surgery procedures.
"This $300 million so far that we have collected by way of additional tax on this category
of drinks goes straight back to the hand of the distillers rather than going to programs
like that," he said on Fairfax Radio.
"If the Liberals proceed with blocking this in the Senate, as they seem to be doing,
then that $300 million then gets anchored into the back pocket of the distillers because
that's what happens."
But the distillers do not want the money - which they say is $200 million - back.
"Our members do not seek to profit from a situation in which the government is forced
to return tax revenues collected without Senate approval," Distilled Spirits Industry
Council of Australia spokesman Stephen Riden said.
"If and when enabling legislation is rejected by the Senate, all revenue gained from
this poorly conceived tax trial should be returned to the community for use in alcohol-related
harm minimisation programs.
"The $200 million collected to date would make a huge impact if directed towards community-based
education and intervention programs."
Mr Rudd said the government increased the tax - which made ready-to-drinks between
30 cents and $1.30 more expensive - on the advice of health authorities and state police
commissioners.
"We had to act to close a tax loophole on a particular category of drinks where you
saw this explosion in drinking on the part of teenagers in general and teenage girls in
particular," he said.

A 47-year-old man from Miners Rest near Ballarat died after a head-on crash on Yankee
Flat Road about 1.30am (AEST).

Fed: PM deprives Labor of another stoush on Iraq
CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard flies to New Zealand this morning
for a whistlestop trans-Tasman visit - depriving Labor of a final opportunity this week
to question him over Iraq.
Mr Howard and Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd have locked horns over Australia's policy
in Iraq during every question time this week.
But a commitment to annual trans-Tasman talks means Mr Howard will miss the final skirmish
of the parliamentary week.
Parliament will then break for a week before returning on February 26.
Mr Howard's fortunes have ebbed and flowed over the week after he launched an unexpected
attack against US presidential hopeful Barack Obama at the weekend over his policy of
withdrawing US troops from Iraq by March 2008.
The Obama row has turned into an increasingly personal debate between Mr Howard and
Mr Rudd over Australia's role in Iraq.
A defiant Mr Howard yesterday refused to admit the war in Iraq had been a mistake.
Mr Rudd repeatedly challenged Mr Howard to outline his exit strategy for Australian
troops, pledging that a Labor government would bring the soldiers home by the middle of
next year.
Mr Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer accused Mr Rudd of wanting the United
States to surrender in Iraq, and mocked him for saying that the consequences for the US
of losing the war would be "bad".
And Mr Howard accused Mr Rudd of lacking courage, saying that deep down Mr Rudd knew
he was right.
But the prime minister didn't have it all his own way, admitting he could not guarantee
that the US would not begin its own staged withdrawal if President George W Bush's "surge"
strategy of sending an extra 20,000 troops did not work.

Andrew Campbell described his brother as "a knockabout kind of guy". He had been in
Canberra for 15 years and left his taxi job seven months before his death.
Mr Campbell had seen his family less than 48 hours before his death when he helped
his parents move from Canberra to Batemans Bay on the NSW south coast.
Police are remaining tight-lipped about the investigation and will not reveal the cause
of death, saying only that Mr Campbell had been assaulted.
"The investigations are still continuing, specifically from a forensics assessment
to identify anything in relation to a murder weapon," Detective Sergeant David Harrison
said.
"Nothing is ruled out and we have very strong lines of inquiry that we are following."
Sgt Harrison said two women had contacted police anonymously and offered some information,
and he urged them to call again.
Detectives also want information on an early model mid-sized white sedan parked in
the Woden and Tuggeranong areas, but refused to elaborate.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Twisted, for Warner Books.
SIDELIGHTS: British horror and suspense writer Shaun Hutson has published more than fifty books, using his own name as well as a variety of pseudonyms. Hutson's early work is most often classified in the horror genre, his plots relying on supernatural forces and grotesque imagery to capture the attention of his readers. As his career has progressed, Huston's writing has likewise evolved, and his more recent fiction incorporates mystery and suspense techniques, melding them with the horror genre he previously mastered. In addition to novels, Hutson has written for radio, television, and magazines, as well as for the Internet. His early horror novel Slugs, was made into a 1988 movie, for which Hutson wrote the screenplay; a prolific writer, he reportedly penned the novelization of the popular film The Terminator in ten days.
Warhol's Prophecy tells the story of a young girl who wanders away from her mother and is eventually found by a man who subsequently develops a relationship with the child's mother. At the same time, the woman's husband is already embroiled in his own extramarital affair. David Mathew, in an online review for Infinity Plus, wrote that the novel "can be speed-read by a reviewer in an hour, or thereabouts, or it can be enjoyed for its sex and violence and unpretentiousness—its single-sentence paragraphs—by the author's more regular followers."
Hybrid follows a best-selling author who is struggling to write while facing an endless stream of petty difficulties. Suddenly, new pages of a novel begin to appear on his computer each morning, despite the fact that he shuts down the machine each night. In a review for the Counterculture Web site, Sion Smith called Hybrid "disjoined," adding that "while the premise of the story is great in theory, in practice it's a bit tainted." In contrast, Hutson's novel Victims, which focuses on the idea that some people attract the attention of murderers due to their behavioral quirks, was praised by a St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost, and Gothic Writers essayist as a "tour de force" and one of the "strongest performances" from an author "with his finger on the pulse of modern horror fiction publishing."

Artesia Technologies unveils new option for transforming Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into corporate resources; Integration with the leading digital asset management platform captures and extends value of pre-eminent business tool.
M2 PRESSWIRE-24 October 2000-Artesia Technologies: Artesia Technologies unveils new option for transforming Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into corporate resources; Integration with the leading digital asset management platform captures and extends value of pre-eminent business tool (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:18102000
Rockville, MD -- Artesia Technologies, the leader in enterprise digital asset management, today announced a new option that will facilitate the seamless integration of Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into content repositories being managed by the company's TEAMS digital asset management solution. The TEAMS PowerPoint Presentation option intelligently captures and organises PowerPoint presentations into an enterprise-class, digital asset management framework that is infinitely searchable, while also allowing users to create new presentations from these captured assets via their web browser. This new option for the award-winning TEAMS solution further extends its ability to manage and redeploy nearly all content types, while also ensuring that these important business assets receive the same sophisticated protection that other digital assets enjoy within TEAMS.
"TEAMS now allows organisations to search across the enterprise for information embedded within presentations in order to easily reuse and re-deploy this information in a secure environment," commented Sebastian Holst, vice president of marketing for Artesia Technologies. "In today's economy, PowerPoint presentations have emerged as one of the key means for expressing and sharing ideas. With this in mind, we believe the new functionality that TEAMS extends to this important format can be a critical business advantage in today's competitive landscape."
By storing and managing presentations within the TEAMS environment, users can take advantage of a host of best-in-class features. For example, TEAMS support for nearly all format types allows users to manage and maintain links easily between presentation, master template and slides. The combination of TEAMS enterprise-class performance and its ability to conduct advanced search and retrieval functions across content, as well as across its associated XML-based metadata, allows organisations to find and reuse presentations effectively throughout the enterprise. Equally important, rights and permissions features contained within TEAMS preserve and protect highly confidential information by controlling access on a per-user or per-asset basis.
As a web-based technology, users will find it easy to integrate the new option into their existing workflow. After a new PowerPoint presentation has been created, the TEAMS PowerPoint Adapter automatically captures all of the individual elements of the presentation, including individual slides and the slide master template, and stores them alongside the overall presentation. As part of this process, information, such as speaker notes and text contained within slides, is automatically captured and stored as searchable, XML-based metadata that is embedded into the specific files with viewable, thumbnail proxies being created for each asset as well.
Bi-directional links, a feature employed in TEAMS, can automatically maintain and update the relationships between various components of a presentation.
New presentations are created from captured assets by selecting slides, master templates or entire presentations from TEAMS. If a master template was selected, the TEAMS PowerPoint Generator will make all slides within the new presentation conform to that master template.
The TEAMS PowerPoint Presentation option is based on direct customer feedback obtained by Artesia's Professional Services division and is just one example of the value-added benefit that this in-house resource offers to the company's customers. In addition to developing customised software that extends the benefits of the TEAMS solution, they provide business consulting and system integration services supporting the implementation of digital asset management strategies and systems.
Scheduled for immediate general availability, pricing for the TEAMS PowerPoint Presentation option is available from Artesia or an authorised reseller.

CROSS ACCESS Introduces SERIESfour; Offers Native, Fast, Scalable Legacy Data Connectivity For Data Marts, ERP Applications.
Standardizes Access to Mainframe Non-Relational Data for Rapid Implementation
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Companies implementing data marts or enterprise resource management (ERP) applications now have the means to natively access, connect and migrate data from legacy mainframe databases in a faster, easier and more efficient manner than ever before.
CROSS ACCESS Corporation today announced the introduction of CrossAccess SERIESfour(TM), middleware that enables the connecting of non-relational data and metadata from mainframe environments with distributed systems, without the need for and added expense of COBOL-trained programmers. With 70% of today's business-critical data residing on mainframes, the need to integrate this data with IT initiatives like data marts and ERP applications has never been greater. SERIESfour sets a new standard in native data connectivity, providing unparalleled performance and true enterprise scalability.
"People need to obtain insights from the enormous legacy data stored on VSE, MVS and OS/390 mainframes. CrossAccess SERIESfour makes accessing that data and its associated metadata practical in a cost-effective and timely manner," said CROSS ACCESS President and Chief Operating Officer George Langan. "The ability to quickly move that data into a data mart or a new ERP application's databases is crucial to businesses which depend on information as a competitive asset. With the built-in speed of SERIESfour, people can migrate data far more quickly and at far less cost," Langan added.
With CrossAccess, users transparently access their disparate mainframe data stores, then use CrossAccess' mapping and translation abilities to forward both the data and metadata into common desktop applications, data mart tools or a LAN-based relational database without mainframe programming. CrossAccess makes it possible for business users to natively access critical data resources with leading applications, ranging from Microsoft(R) Office to high-powered decision support tools like Impromptu and Business Objects.
"CrossAccess is enabling us to efficiently migrate data from our legacy databases into our newly-developed data mart," said Roger Peterson, Vice President, IS, at Kawasaki Motors Corporation, U.S.A. "It works quickly and lets us get the data we need to make the project a success. It is saving us time and money, and is doing what it is supposed to do. You can't ask more than that."
Similar praise for SERIESfour also came from Areiel Wolanow, Principal at Data Movement Research, and former manager of consulting services at SmartDB Corporation. "Companies implementing enterprise packages, such as SAP(R) R/3(R), face the challenge of moving huge blocks of legacy data in a short time to gain the maximum result from their investments. CrossAccess SERIESfour(TM) demonstrates the promise of simplifying that process, minimizing the pain of migration and allowing companies to meet their most stringent deadlines," Wolanow said.
CrossAccess enables data analysts to directly connect widely used data warehousing tools like the Sagent Data Mart Solution or Prism Executive Suite with mainframe data stores, critical to populating a data mart. And developers implementing packaged applications can rapidly migrate legacy data into the new application's databases without coding complex 3GL applications (as evidenced by the Oracle and SAP certification of CrossAccess).
Speed is a key benefit of SERIESfour. CrossAccess customers have routinely found themselves amazed at the speed of initial implementation, typically taking less than two hours. Once CrossAccess is up and running, companies also report sub-second response to queries involving disparate databases, meaning access to information in a fraction of the time it takes using other solutions.
CrossAccess SERIESfour includes an entire suite of products, including Cross Access' DataMapper(TM), which automates the mapping of non-relational data structures to logical relational tables, while maintaining the structural integrity of the underlying file or database.
CrossAccess SERIESfour also integrates with hundreds of ODBC compliant tools, including IBM's DataJoiner(TM), which enables users to join and access data from various sources on multiple platforms; Sagent's Data Mart Suite, which enables the definition, creation and distribution of data marts; Impromptu, Brio Query and Business Objects, which provide powerful data query and analysis for decision support; and PowerBuilder and Visual Basic, which enable complex client/server and Internet application development. Pricing for CrossAccess SERIESfour begins at $30,000, with volume discounts available.

Human energy is the way forward!
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
I just visited a site on the web which tells of a very special type of night-club in Rotterdam, Holland. http://www.europaconcorsi.com/db/pub/scheda.php?id=15245
The basic concept is to use the energy of dancers to generate electricity by using an energy (Re) generating dance-floor. This would be a great way for Dubai to reduce the ecological footprint of new establishments of this type whilst at the same time profiting from sustainability.
The Club in question will also use innovative walls and sofas that change colour without using energy as a reaction to body heat and many other energy generating/saving concepts such as heat and sweat capturing, smart acoustics and LED lighting systems. Biological drinks and food will be served and new forms of marketing used. Worth looking into to show we really care for the planet no?

About SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM
WWW.SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight short selling. SqueezeTrigger.com has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds and short sale time and sale data from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short trades.
SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly 2.5 billion short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like SqueezeTrigger.com to access the data.
The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each montha'a"s short transactions, SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.

IEEE Creates Microsite.
IEEE created a new microsite, IEEE Solutionists, featuring perspectives in engineering and technology.
According to a release, this site hosts a series of articles from IEEE Fellows, including Norm Augustine, Sophie Vandebroek, Vinton Cerf, and John Cioffi, where they offer insight on how engineers can drive technical innovation; evolve perceptions of engineers globally; show how education impacts engineering; and why it's important for engineers to follow their dreams to change the world, among other topics.
Topics include:
Engineering Innovation: Making Education and Best Talent Top Priorities
-Norm Augustine, IEEE Life Fellow and retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, noted in a January 2011 Forbes article, "Scientists and engineers are celebrities in most countries. They're not seen as geeks or misfits, as they too often are in the U.S., but rather as society's leaders and innovators. In China, eight of the top nine political posts are held by engineers. In the U.S., almost no engineers or scientists are engaged in high-level politics, and there is a virtual absence of engineers in our public policy debates. Why does this matter? If American students have a negative impression or no impression at all of science and engineering, then they're hardly likely to choose them as professions. Already, 70 percent of engineers with PhDs who graduate from U.S. universities are foreign-born. Increasingly, these talented individuals are not staying in the U.S. instead, they're returning home, where they find greater opportunities."
-In an April 2011 op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Cerf, IEEE Fellow and Google's chief Internet evangelist explores how "Young people should understand and experience the thrill of science and discovery. We need to help them do real science, not just read about it, through collaborative tools that help mentors and students to interact through programs such as the IEEE's TryEngineering.org. Children learn best by seeing and doing, not by memorizing. It's also important to reintroduce to the American culture a higher regard for engineers and scientists. Our successful scientists and engineers should be made more visible and their voices heard more often. Most important, however, is the need to refresh and invigorate interest in and regard for science and engineering in our youth."
Promoting Engineering: Be Passionate and Follow Your Dreams
-As Cioffi, an IEEE Fellow and CEO and chairman of Assia discussed in a February 2011 Forbes article, "Making a positive impact on society is one of the primary reasons to become an engineer and also to become an entrepreneur. True engineering contribution does not arise solely from writing papers and making presentations, but requires a simultaneous effort to realize ideas in practice. If you don't develop these fine ideas into realistic implementations, there is a good chance no one else will either."
-In March 2011, IEEE Fellow and Xerox's chief technology officer and president of the Xerox Innovation Group, Vandebroek said in BusinessWeek, "We must share more frequently how rewarding it is to be an engineer. Every day I get to work with passionate people who are envisioning and then creating the future--today: engineers and scientists who are making the planet a better place by addressing important issues such as climate change, health care, hunger, and more."
"Engineers hold a powerful role in delivering societal solutions that can inspire technical and non-technical communities to innovate for a better future," said Moshe Kam, IEEE president and CEO, and Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University. "We are driving a cultural change in how the world--and especially our youth--think about engineers, as providers of valuable solutions that impact daily life. These solutions raise the standard of living, preserve finite resources, and protect the environment."
IEEE is a technical professional association.

New questions.(The SONGFINDER: A reader-assisted song search service)
Mark Gregory passed along a query from Malcolm Loy about a working-class poem or song entitled THERE AIN'T/AREN'T NO SCABS IN HEAVEN. Loy was employed for 40 years as a coal miner in New South Wales, so it might be Australian in origin. Any leads?
D. Kingsley Hahn is looking for a recording of Pete Seeger (with Arlo Guthrie?) of THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND with all seven of Woody Guthrie's original stanzas, including "freedom highway," "private property / no trespassing" and "relief office."
Sally Porter asked for SING-ALONG SONGS WRITTEN BY YOUNG SINGERS (30 and younger). Thus far, only one response: George Mann recommended Evan Greer's "Picket Line Song."
In his v.21#1 column, Michael Cooney mentioned a magazine circulated on 5" reel-to-reel tapes titled FOLK VOICE (1958-72). Bill Clifton recently contacted me in his search for copies of this interesting title. I was a subscriber but have no copies in my possession, including the one which had my 1962 interview with Neil Rosenberg about bluegrass music. Folk Voice's coeditor, Jim Marshall, has reported that he possibly has master tapes of 25 (out of 81) of the issues. Does anyone out there have any copies?
I have been assisting Fred Stollnitz in identifying origins of songs to be included in a revised version of the Swarthmore College Alumni Songbook. One item, LYDIA PINKHAM, remains a puzzle. It is mentioned in the v.39#4 issue of this column in connection with a 1951 parody by Johnny Standley, "Grandma's Lye Soap." I had supplied a 1904 sheet music titled "Our Lydia," published in Jersey City but with no indication of authorship. The tune seems to be "I Will Sing to My Redeemer." Can anyone trace "Lydia" back to earlier appearances and a particular authorship?
Lou Curtiss forwarded a request for a song about wanting to die from eating POSSUM PIE, with a line about needing "a million waiters to bring me sweet potaters." There is a refrain on the Internet quoting Gene Owens, but no verses. If you find this one, you will not only make Lou happy, but also Jack Beard, who was searching for songs about southern foods (v.53#4).
In 1945-46, I attended the fifth grade at Worthington Hooker Elementary School in New Haven, Connecticut. As I recall, we spent much of the year learning a song called SULPHUR/SULFUR MATCHES. As a result, the following lines have stuck in my mind all these years: "Sulphur matches, sulphur matches makes a flame like yellow hair / If you strike a sulphur match a fire soon blazes there / If at night you should need a light strike a sulphur match and your lamp soon glows / Tiny torch my fingers scorch then puff and out it goes." I figure the only way I can drive the ditty out of my mind is to find it in print and ascertain its authorship. Thus far I've had no luck. Who can help?!
If you are looking for a song or can help find one for someone else, write to "The Songfinder," Sing Out!, P.O. Box 5460, Bethlehem, PA 18015-0460 and we'll forward it to Joe Hickerson. Or send e-mail (answers only, please) to songfinder@singout.org. Questions seeking specific information (such as a recording, printed version or copyright information) should be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please include as much detail in your answers as possible (your daytime telephone number, complete title of the work in question, author or artist's name, recording catalog number or ISBN/LCCN, publisher and publisher's address, if available).
